On November 16, 2019, Save a Child’s Heart (SACH) medical team from Wolfson Medical Center traveled to The Children Cardiac Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for a lifesaving heart surgery and Catheterizations mission alongside the Ethiopian team. Operating Room, Cath Lab, Cardiology Clinic and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit teams worked together day and night to perform 9 open-heart surgeries and 22 lifesaving cathertizations, as well as screened and diagnose 107 children, and followed up on past patients.
Since 1996, Save a Child's Heart has treated more than 700 children from Ethiopia and trained a pediatric cardiac surgeon, two anesthesiologists, four pediatric cardiologists and two intensivists, all of whom are now practising locally. Currently, a pedictraic cardiac surgeon and an anesthesiologist are training at Wolfson. In 2012, Dr. Yayehyirad (Yayu) Mekonnen Ejigu began a five-year pediatric cardiac surgery training program at the Wolfson Medical Center. Dr. Yayu completed his training in 2017 and then completed an 18 months fellowship at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Yayu was part of the main team working to save children's lives.
