Cape Town, South Africa, February 2010

The Save a Child's Heart exhibition opens in Cape Town, more than 200 people attended and it was a great success!

The Save a Child’s Heart international photography exhibition was opened in the Artscape Theatre Foyer area in Cape Town on February 8, 2010. The evening was extremely successful thanks to Esta levitas, Save a Child's Heart President in South Africa and the Western Province Zionist Council who helped organize the event.

More than 300 people attended the event, among them the Israeli Ambassador to South Africa, parliament members, members of the medical community in Cape Town, Cape Town’s top donors, media representatives and more.

Special guests were two Save a Child’s Heart doctors, one Israeli and one Palestinian, who were invited to open the exhibit – Dr. Akiva Tamir and Dr. Wafiq Othman. Save a Child’s Heart executive director Simon Fisher was also invited to speak at the reception.

The event opened with a screening of the film “The Betty Story” which tells the story of five year old Betty from Ethiopia who made the journey from her village in Ethiopia to Israel to undergo life saving open heart surgery.
Betty, who is now ten years old, was invited to Cape Town with her mother to take part in the event. While watching the movie Betty was very emotional and both her and her mother cried.

A young South African school girl, who was born with a congenital heart disease, was invited to speak at the event and shared her personal experience with the guests. Her speech was extremely emotional and made many of the attendees cry. Click here to see her speech.

Mikhaela Levitas, a South African who volunteered at the SACH children’s home last summer, attended the event and spoke about her experience as a South Africa in living in the SACH home and helping the children before and after their heart surgery. Click here to see her speech.

The weeks prior to the opening of the exhibition preparation work was done by Esta levitas who gave presentations to potential donors, went to schools, youth programs, camps and different communities to speak about SACH and raise awareness to the activity of the project both in Israel and abroad. IN addition, some of the exhibit photographs were displayed in schools and workshops were organized to speak with students about SACH.
