The Amazing Story of Lyka from the Philippines

Lyka, SACH first child from the Philippines, is brought to Israel for life saving heart surgery

Eight months old Lyka from the Philippines was brought to Israel by SACH on February 25 in a severe condition following her grandmother's pledge for help.

Lyka was born with a congenital heart disease; she needed urgent life saving surgery and could not be treated in the Philippines.

Bringing such a severely sick baby all the way from the Philippines to Israel was a difficult operation; the airlines insisted that Lyka have a medical escort on her flight to Israel, oxygen and ambulances to transfer her from plane to plane as well as an ambulance waiting for her upon arrival in Israel.

Even though the funds had not been raised, Talma Rothstein, the devoted employee of Lyka's grandmother, decided to buy the plane tickets while continuing to search for funding.

After landing in Israel Lyka was taken directly to the Wolfson Medical Center where she was stabilized. The following day, Lyka underwent catheterization. On March 4, one week after catheterization, Lyka underwent life saving open heart surgery.

On March 15, Lyka was taken out of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and moved to the children's ward where she is recovering well.

International widespread appeals for the funds required for Lyka's surgery and the extraordinary costs associated with the necessity of a medical escort have been met with great success.

Although we are still seeking funds to cover transport costs, the funds necessary to cover the cost of Lyka's surgery in Israel have been raised through Canadian

initiatives. These initiatives will continue to raise funds for children everywhere who require help from SACH.
